King Lunalilo
Hawaiâi artist Mark Martel has infused classic black and white photos with vivid, royal color to show the Hawaiian Royalty in a fresh, Pop-Art style.
King Lunalilo
1835-1874, reigned: 1873-1874
The Peopleâs King. After Kamehameha V died with no heir, the choice of new king fell to the legislature. But the liberal Lunalilo insisted everyone vote, and he won by a popular landslide.
As King, Lunalilo tried to reverse the monarchyâs powers and make Hawaiâi more democratic. But tuberculosis and alcohol took their toll, and he ruled only a year before dying. He is buried not with the other kings, but with his people.
