Queen Liliâuokalani
1838-1917, reigned 1891-1893
âFarewell to thee.â In England to celebrate Queen Victoriaâs fifty years as monarch, Liliâuokalani learned Hawaiiâs King Kalakaua had been forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution at swordpoint.
As Hawaiiâs only Queen she tried to restore the monarchyâs powers, but in 1893 American and European businessmen pulled off a coup.
She was cut off from her people and imprisoned alone in the palace for a year. She wrote down her memoirs and original songs, including the famous âAloha âOeâânot just a loversâ goodbye, but a lament for her country.
